The popular uprising in Naples, Italy, between September 27 and 30, 1943, was a successful effort by the civilian population to liberate the city from German occupation during World War II. Eighty years later, this documentary recounts the story of an act of “civil and popular resistance” by an entire city. To connect the past to the present, the film uses animation to tell the story of four young protagonists of the uprising. Another fundamental pillar of the narrative is the “voice” of Naples, written by Maurizio De Giovanni and performed by Luisa Ranieri. Along with images of Naples today, archival footage, and excerpts from Nanni Loy’s film, this voice blends with the stories and voices emerging from the animated sequences to present a dramatically relevant story in a contemporary key.
